당신은 사랑을 믿나요?(사랑밭 새벽편지)

Do you believe in love?
Do you believe in endless love like
stars shining in the night sky?

당신은 사랑을 믿나요?
밤하늘의 별들처럼,
무한한 사랑을 당신은 믿나요?


Once upon a time there was a small village.
Since this village was in a deep mountain,
many urban people couldn’t know its existence.
There was also nothing to eat in the small village.

옛날 옛날 산골짜기에 작은 마을이 있었대요.
너무너무 깊은 산속에 있어서 도회지 사람들은
있는지도 모르는 그런 마을이었지요.
산속이라 먹을 것도 없었대요.


Most of the residents in the small village
lived poorly without any pleasure.
One day, a well sprouted under a tree
at an entrance to a village.
Taste of the well water was sweet
Residents in the small village believed
that it was granted by the sky.

사람들은 즐거움도 모르고 가난하게
살고 있었지요. 그런데 어느 날 마을 어귀의
나무 밑에서 샘이 솟기 시작했어요.
너무나도 달콤한 샘이었지요.
하늘에서 내려준 것 같았더래요.


If patients drank the well water, their pain
such as stomachache could be cured by
the water and they could gain strength.
Moreover, trees around the well bare fruit.
Residents in the small village became rich.

그 샘물을 마시면 아픈 사람도 낫고,
배도 안 고프고, 힘도 솟았답니다.
거기다가 샘 주위엔 열매까지 열리지 않겠어요?
마을은 금방 풍요로워졌어요.


Residents in the small village had a vivid face.
However much they drank it,
the well didn’t run dry up.
It was a precious thing for them.

사람들의 얼굴에도 생기가 돌았죠.
아무리 많이 마셔도, 샘은 마르지 않았어요.
무한해 보였죠.
사람들에게 샘은 너무도 소중했어요.


Time slipped by.
Since the well has not been dry up,
residents in the small village thought
the well all for granted.
They thought that the well always was in there.

시간이 흘렀어요.
사람들은 이제 샘을 당연하게 생각하기
시작했어요. 마르지 않았으니까요.
언제나 그곳에 있을 줄 알았죠.


One day, the well dried up.
It seemed that the well couldn’t offer to residents.
Residents were deeply distressed by dried well.
They lost suddenly their abundance that
was filled with their heart.

그런데 어느 날, 샘이 말라 버렸어요.
샘은 사람들에게 더 이상 줄 것이 없었나 봐요.
사람들은 너무 괴로워했대요.
가슴 가득했던 그 충만함이 갑자기
사라져 버린 게 아니겠어요?


Residents felt awfully sorry for what they neglected it.
They tried to recollect how they neglected it
and grieved about it.
It was too late for regrets.
Residents started to have a grievance against the well.
“ If the well had not given to us…”

사람들은 자신들이 샘을 소홀히
했던 것을 후회했어요.
그리고 잘못한 것만 생각났어요.
그리고 슬퍼했어요.
하지만 후회해봤자 이미 말라버린 샘은
돌아오지 않는 걸요?
사람들은 원망도 했어요.
차라리 처음부터 그 샘이 없었더라면...

메마르지 않는 영원한 사랑을,
당신은 믿나요?

Everybody's feeling is subject to change
like an order of nature.
Since love is one of those feelings,
it can drive you to despair
if you believe in endless love

자연의 이치가 그러하듯
사람의 감정은 변하기 마련입니다.
사랑도 그 감정 가운데 하나이기에
영원히 변하지 않으리라는 희망은
오히려 절망을 불러올 수 있습니다.


When you throw away your vain hope and greed
And try to keep your present feeling through
thoughtful consideration each other
And then your love will last.

헛된 희망이나 과용을 버리고
서로에 대한 배려로 지금 그 감정을
지키려 노력할 때
사랑은 오래오래 계속됩니다.
