문화의 차이-영문 사랑밭 새벽편지

A disappointed salesman of a Cola company
returns from his Middle East assignment.

중동 아시아에 파견되었던
콜라 회사의 영업사원이 좌절하고 돌아왔다.


A friend asked,
"Why weren't you successful with the Arabs?"

한 친구가 물었다.
"왜 아랍에서 성공하지 못한거지?"


The salesman explained,
"When I got posted in the Middle East,
I was very confident that
I would make a good sales pitch as Cola is
virtually unknown there.

영업사원은 그 이유를 이렇게 설명했다.
"중동에 파견되었을 때,
콜라는 그곳에서 거의 알려져있지 않기 때문에
매출을 쉽게 올릴 수 있을 거라고 장담했었지."


But, I had a problem I didn't know
to speak Arabic. So, I planned to convey
the message through threeposters...

"난 아랍어를 못하니까 포스터 세 개로
콜라에 대해 전달하려고 했어."





First poster -
A man lying in the hot desert sand...
totally exhausted and fainting.

* 첫번째 포스터
한 남자가 완전히 탈진하여 뜨거운 사막에 쓰러져 있다.


Second poster - man is drinking our Cola.

* 두번재 포스터
남자가 우리 회사의 콜라를 마신다.


Third poster- Our man is now totally refreshed.

* 세번째 포스터
원기를 회복한 남자


Then these posters were pasted all over the place
"That should have worked," said the friend.

이 세 개의 포스터를 곳곳에 붙였놨지.
"그럼 효과를 봤겠네." 친구가 말했다.


The salesman replied "I didn't realize that
Arabs go from right to left"

영업사원이 대답했다.
"그런데, 내가 놓친게 있었어.
아랍인들은 오른쪽부터 읽기 때문에
우리 포스터의 내용을 반대로 이해했더라고."
